Deepali Zeer (she/her) is a performance artist and theater practitioner. Her work is musical by/in nature and circulates ideas around madness in relation to the colonized/feminized body. Zeer is/has been an Affiliated/Resident Artist with Target Margin Theater, La MaMa, The Civilians, New Georges, and Ars Nova. She facilitates the New Georges Jam and serves on the Board of Directors of The Poetry Project. Past/present theatrical and operatic commissions include American Opera Projects (NIGHTLIFE; with composer T.J. Rubin), Whitesnake Projects (BANANA KETCHUP / with composer Nilo Alcala, Target Margin Theater (THE POET SAYS), JACK (UNITED STATES V. GUPTA), and Ars Nova (I LOVE YOU STRANGER). Deepali is a first generation immigrant of Kashmiri, Punjabi, and Bengali descent; neurodiverging, and a survivor of psychiatric incarceration. Her artistic and research practice has been supported by organizations including the Axe-Houghton Foundation, Brooklyn Arts Council, New York State Council on the Arts; and NYC Women's Fund for Music, Media, and Theatre. She leads MOOD DISORDERS UNIT, an anti-clinical collective focused on creating therapeutic performance; and performs music with drummer Zack Segel under the name KAJAL.
